Position Purpose

The DCS Engineer I is responsible for providing basic DCS Engineering support to ensure the integrity and operation of the plant DCS control and Safety systems in compliance with EG LNG’s Process Safety Management Program as well as all EG LNG Health, Environment and Safety policies.

Job Functions

  • Promotes and supports Health, Environmental and Safety aspects related to Instrument and general plant maintenance both for own staff and all contractors and vendor representatives in accordance with Company’ Process Safety Management (PSM) and OSHA-based HES system.
  • Develops a basic understanding of critical systems such as Distributed Control and Safety System (i.e. Emerson DeltaV (DCS) and ICS Trusted (SIS,BMS), which includes APC, IDM, Alarm Management, and other PC or interface systems (i.e. PI Historian, AMS, MHM, OPC servers and Management software applications.
  • Assists with adequate design & performance of the “critical systems” listed above. Maintains high availability and reliability of all “Systems” by reducing instrument-related variability throughout the process by Continuous Improvement.
  • Develop detailed knowledge on Control systems to the Engineering, Maintenance and Production departments so as to minimize unplanned outages by identifying and resolving technical issues.
  • Assists with basic development and implementation of DCS policies, strategies, procedures and systems to facilitate the safe commissioning and ongoing operation of the EG LNG plant of existing and new equipment.
  • Assists with providing basic Design, Engineering and Construction Service and assisting with some plant modifications and changes through in-house and contracted staff in close coordination with the Projects Engineering while adhering to Management of Change (MOC) and PSM requirements.
  • Ensures support for the maintenance management system by providing basic technical advice in the techniques and assisting in the execution of maintenance activities on “Systems” equipment. Assists in the project spare parts review for ensuring equipment maintainability and availability.
  • Assists with set-up and management of databases for control system equipment and analyzers under the supervision of the DCS Controls Engineer.
  • Develops basic understanding of regulatory and statutory compliance of instrument related activities. Assists in Carrying out technical audits at EG LNG’s installation and instrument contractor’s facilities under the supervision of the DCS Engineer.
  • Assist with current/new technology through on/off the job training to maintain knowledge centers for new developments in control systems. Maintains best practices for Control systems through contact with Global LNG and petrochemical industry.
  • Support the Out of Hours, DCS Emergency Response On call Rota.
  • Participates in Management led initiatives including KPI’s, AMS, SAP and QMS.
  • Participates, as required, in other activities as assigned from time to time by the line manager or supervisor, including personal training and development assignment opportunities.
  • Additional duties will be assigned from time to time by the line manager or supervisor as required to meet business needs including personal training and development opportunities.

Education and Experience

Essential:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Higher National Certification (HNC) or equivalent (Instrumentation, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering) with additional training in general field Instrumentation, automation, DCS systems, PLC’s and Compressor control systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the oil, petrochemical or LNG industry
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting of Industrial Automation Systems, Instrumentation and hands-on work in Process Plants supporting project commissioning, (Oil & Gas, Chemical, Power)

Qualities / Attributes

  • Engineering Fundamentals: A solid grasp of mathematics, physics, and basic electrical engineering principles (circuits, motors, etc.).
  • Control Systems & Automation: Understanding the theory and application of process control, including PID control loops, and Logic gates.
  • Instrumentation: Familiarity with field instruments that measure pressure, temperature, flow, and level, as well as control valves and safety instrumented systems (SIS).
  • Industrial Systems: Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are necessary.
  • Networking: A basic understanding of computer and industrial network protocols (e.g., Serial Communications, Modbus, Fieldbus, OPC, TCP/IP) is important for integrating various systems.
  • Reading Technical Documents: The ability to interpret and work with various engineering drawings, such as P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), single line diagrams, and wiring schematics.
  • Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting: Strong analytical and logical thinking skills are vital for diagnosing and resolving issues in complex systems.
  • Communication & Teamwork: DCS engineers collaborate with various teams (operators, process engineers, maintenance), so clear communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision is key in engineering to ensure safety and system reliability.
  • Adaptability & Eagerness to Learn: Technology in this field evolves rapidly, requiring commitment to continuous learning and staying updated on the latest developments.

Physical Requirements / Work Conditions

  • Most work is unconstrained, seated office work. Some outside supervision of tasks requires walking, climbing stairs, stooping and standing.
  • Most work is performed in an air-conditioned office environment; however, some work is also performed outside in all weather conditions in a noisy operating environment.

Equipment Operated

  • Standard office equipment, personal computer and plant control and monitoring systems.
